Oops! I'm locked out!

It is your responsibility to carry your keys. For your privacy and protection, only you, your roommates, and the head resident have access to your room. The custodial crew is NOT allowed to unlock your doors.

It is always inconvenient when you are locked out, so here are some suggestions to avoid such a situation:

Take your keys with you at ALL times EVERYWHERE you go…Take them when you go to class, when you hang in the lounge, when you empty your trash in the garbage room, even when you just go next door.
Put your keys on a lanyard (or a large key chain)…This way they are harder to lose. (It costs $25 to re-key your apartment and $10 to replace the key = $35.00)
Keep your keys in a place where you won’t forget them…When I am home, I keep my keys on a hook right by my door. That way every time I lock up and leave, they are right there to remind me.
Communicate with your roommates! Before you leave find out if they are staying, going, going to lock up, etc. Don't assume that someone will be home. If you leave, your key should be with you, no exceptions.
Get to know your neighbors! If nothing else perhaps your neighbors will allow you to crash in their room.

It is absolutely unreasonable to be upset with anyone for not being available to let you in your apartment if you've locked yourself out. It may be frustrating, but it's not anyone's fault but your own if you are locked out of your apartment.

Leaving your doors unlocked is not a good solution to avoid being locked out. We have people walk through our courtyard constantly especially since we are so close to campus. Everyone reserves the right to lock their door so do not blame it on your roommate if you are locked out!

If you lost your key, please do all you can to look for it. If you still cannot find it, please email Jena at hagenj@byui.edu. She can order you a new key. Please be specific: if you lost your mail key, or your apartment key. Please don't wait too long to notify me. It is for your safety and the safety of your roommates that we re-key the apartments.
